Lights at Richmond World Festival | August 31, 2018

Review and Photos by Marissa Bowen

Richmond World Festival prides itself in bringing people from all cultures together and allows them to experience other cultural things that they might not have otherwise been exposed to. Never having been to a Canadian concert, let alone festival, I was very excited to see what was waiting for me. Not only was it free to get in, there was something for everyone. There were a lot of performances throughout that night that highlighted these things.

The festival had tons of booths with handmade arts from all over the world. And if that wasn’t enough, they had over 50 food trucks to fully indulge in the flavors of these cultures. This was a two-day festival where you could be enriched in culture by day and see some awesome Canadian musicians perform by night. The first night’s headliner and the main reason I was there, was Lights.

Song after song, there was no sign of slowing down. Lights made constant movement across the stage. Easily switching from dancing to singing to head banging, she was so much fun to watch. She threw in a couple of covers, to which the whole crowd quickly sang along. After first warming up the crowd with a cover of “Lovefool” by The Cardigans, she then was joined by the whole audience with singing and dancing while she played “Believe” by Cher. She did beautiful renditions of each song while putting her own spin on it, and as she performed the covers, the crowd was filled with only happy faces.

Lights had a good mixture of songs from all of her albums, while still giving us most of the songs off of her most recent album Skin and Earth. She slowed it down a bit for one of my personal favorites, “Almost Had Me” from that album and encouraged the audience to hold up their cell phone’s LED lights while she jumped on the keys. The audience quickly illuminated and a huge smile went across her face as she told us how beautiful we all looked. She also got into the crowd multiple times throughout the night. You could see she truly loves her fans by how up close and personal she got with them every time. There were several intimate moments like this throughout the night, which helped to make it special. She definitely gave her fans a night to remember.

Overall, I think her fans and spectators alike would agree that she put on an incredible show and is such a force of nature on stage! Until next time, Richmond!
